Critics loved Ponyo, Hayao Miyazaki's latest film, and said its fantastical images, total lack of CGI, and unconventional female lead (described as a mix of Ralph Wiggum and the Tasmanian Devil) make it this summer's best animated film.
Miyazaki says for animators, "It's not very pleasant to draw evil figures," so he doesn't. Instead, he comes up with his creative plots by, "thinking, thinking and thinking... If you have a better way, please let me know." [L.A. Times]
Yesterday Disney released the trailer for the English-language version of Ponyo, which opens on August 14. It's loosely based on The Little Mermaid, but like Hayao Miyazaki's other heroines, Ponyo is no Disney princess.
