I made a radio documentary about an Afro-Colombian lawyer who got death threats and had to flee for prosecuting corrupt politicians in this area of Colombia. Her story was incredible.
The discrimination and outright brutality that the black and indigenous populations of Colombia face is sickening. And it just keeps happening.
Colombia is such a beautiful place, with so many wonderful people, I hope this issue is resolved and people can live in peace in their own country, but it doesn't seem very likely.
@LaComtesse: I've been reading Samantha Power's book on genocide and its made me realize that "Never Again" is an entirely empty phrase. She tells a story about someone at a State Dept press conference going off on places that had refused to show Schindler's List. Right before that, a State Department employee gave a short presentation on the ongoing "conflict" in Rwanda provoked no anger or shock.
@clevernamehere: Ah yes. Kinda like how the UN has a whole division on Holocaust remembrance but the UN won't call what's happening in Darfur a genocide A) because they'd HAVE to take action if they did and B) Because China is heavily invested in Sudanese oil?
