One of the Canadian polikticians I follow on facebook had his status message congratulating the PRC for 60 years. I...don't know about that. Is this something we should be getting behind? Because I have some reservations.
I'm living in Beijing right now and caught the parade on TV (like over a billion other of us). For weeks, they've been practicing this huge parade and closed down Beijing for days for practice's sake.
As expected, it resulted in a perfect execution.
60 is a huge year for Chinese culture, btw. It's almost equivalent to having a 100-year celebration.
I hope someone has made sure she understands how lucky she is to be able to even attend an event such as this. Hong Kong is the only place in China that is having public remembrances ...elsewhere it's like it never even happened.
I guess Hong Kong is technically China, right? I know it's an S.A.R., but...
@Dr.Mrs.TheMonarch: Yeah, I think a Chinese dissident commented to the WashPost that those who died at Tiananmen Square made a protest like the Hong Kong one possible. The photo in the NYT of 150,000 people with candles just made me weep.
Reminds me of Pay it Forward. The movie was less than stellar, but that final scene with the Jane Siberry song playing in the background makes me cry every time.
Cute photo, but I'm waiting for the tanks to roll.
I just read the NYT photojournalists' blog on the man who stood in front of the tanks at Tiananmen Square and it's making me sad all over again. I remember weeping while watching the news 20 years ago, seeing blood flow in the streets.
I'm sorry to be such a killjoy, ya'll. I think I should step away from the computer for awhile. :-(
This may be a bit out of left field, but I just finished reading a fantasy series called the Sword of Truth, about the rise and fall of a corrupt communist empire (amongst other things), and I have faith that this regime is not self-sustaining in the long term and hopefully these people will get a chance to live free lives eventually.
