You know... Tyra is the original black doll... EVE!
Tyty:"Shaden did you know that I played a black doll in a movie? I'm very pretty, always have been. I used to model. Back in the days I lived with lots of models in Paris. Do you feel pretty now?"
It is really unfortunately, but these princesses really do get mapped onto these kids' psyches...
I mentioned yesterday in a post that I did a childrens' entertainment gig for a while, and one of my go-to assignments was princess. The main reason for this was I had the "right" body type for it - our princess costumes only got so big, and at one point I heard about a mom requesting me over one of my friends because she was a little hippier, and I seemed "more like a princess".
The dress that fit me the best was one that looked very similar to Aurora's in Sleeping Beauty. But I have brown hair, so I would consistently get girls coming up to me and saying I couldn't really be Aurora because of my hair, and I couldn't be Snow White because my dress wasn't right. (Note- the company had no affiliation to Disney... this connection came completely from the kids).
So, the long and the short of it is that it doesn't surprise me at all that this Disney princess is a big step (frog leap?) forward.
However, the fact that these kids use Disney princesses as a map for their images of beauty, is a whole other thing, and one that no amount of ethnically diverse princesses is going to solve.
Unfortunate caption indeed. But I am endlessly thankful that she won't have to constantly relate to toys that look nothing like her. Sure there was always a niche ethnic doll market but this is mainstream - kids of every background will want to join in the fun.
You know when I was a kid in my dreams I was always white with long straight hair. And when I dreamt of having children they were always white. Can you imagine the sense of identity loss that comes with living and breathing in an environment that you have to struggle to relate to.
Small steps of progress but progress all the same.
@Coup d’état: im so glad i'm not the only person who does/did this. When i was younger, I would sometimes forget I was black until some idiot would unceremoniously remind me I was the only one in whatever group of people I was playing with.
When you are bombarded with the same types of images non-stop, especially at such a young age, I think it is difficult to differentiate between your reality and the reality being portrayed in the mass media culture.
I feel awkward because Jasmine is the closest thing they've had to a middle-eastern person,
and um well she was the combination of 3 ethnicities ( indian, arab, african) , two of which are NOT middle-eastern, PLUS her dad was a white anglo.
@FrabjousDay: ya i guess I assumed she was since Alladin is an Arabian tale, and set in Arabia-- the "logical" conclusion is that she was middle-eastern...but you know Disney...everyones either White or "other" to them....
@lavenderstain: It was set in Agrabah, which doesn't exist, but it was designed from a story based in Iraq and pictures of Iran. So it's definitely meant to be Middle Eastern. Where did you hear that Jasmine was a combination of Indian, Arab, and African?
The Sultan isn't necessarily a white anglo. There are plenty of light skinned Middle Eastern people, and since he is the Sultan, there's the whole thing with royalty not being out in the sun as much, which would make him lighter in addition to possibly being naturally light skinned. And he has that massive beard and hat, and is mostly covered, so you don't really see much skin.
I'm assuming you are Middle Eastern yourself, and I hope I'm not offending you or coming across as condescending (if you already know everything I'm saying)... but I think saying "(insert race) doesn't look like that!" can often be just as offensive as saying "this is what (insert race) looks like!" If it were live action, and white actors were getting parts in Middle Eastern roles that Middle Eastern actors were being denied, then that's different... But I think that all of the characters in Aladdin were intentionally and unambiguously Middle Eastern. The way they played up different features for the good guys vs. the bad guys is another story, but I don't think they were suggesting that any of them were white.

I really doubt Disney took all that into account..
@IRISLIVES: Why not? It's not like they didn't do any research & just stumbled into the project completely ignorantly. It's not perfect, but they still put a bit of thought into it.
It isn't really that complex. It's not like they gave him long blonde hair and bright blue eyes. He could easily be Middle Eastern. I just think, out of all the things you could say are wrong with Aladdin, the Sultan's *possible* anglo-ness isn't really worth the fight...
@prismatism is Team Bella: It's definitely not worth the fight..I guess when I think Disney, I think Mickey Mouse in full out Nazi gear givin' a ye old ''Heil Hitler'' Sometimes they can be so blatantly racist.. It clouds my opinion of them.
@Bitingpika: No lie, I have an aunt who looks exactly like Ursula. This isn't an insult, just an honest observation (one I was able to make after seeing The Little Mermaid in first grade).
@Rooo sez BISH PLZ: There's TONS. They have some on the Disney Store website but going into the actual Disney Store, there's a whole two sections devoted to the movie. Multiple dresses, accessories, dolls, figurines, plushes, play sets. collectibles, etc.
@mbprice: You need a dose of Roger Federer. I'm talking scruffy, sideburned, Guga-playing Roger, before "the haircut".
It's not just because he's one of the world's two best tennis players and worth about $50 million and speaks three languages fluently and can dance that I think he's one of the Planet's Yummiest Men.
@Chrysocolla: Oh, honey - you have no idea. Do you not know of RF.com? There you will find your tribe.
Are you new to Jez? Go into the search box and type darling Roger's name. You may get sick of seeing my posts, but you will find lots of lovely pictures, and also, more comrades.
(I'm also a rather ardent fan of Rafa and Juan Martín. We don't bash here. Unless it's the Djoker. Just kidding. Also still mourning Marat's retirement - that will take awhile.)

I for one am going to be pissed if the first gay Disney Princess is morphed into an amphibian for the bulk of the movie.* You can put that descriptor under my face Tyra.
*No offense to Nefarious Newt meant by this comment.
@merely_a_muse: Personally, I'm taking the position that "yeah, it sucks but if it doesn't make money they'll use it as a reason to NEVER do another black princess so grumble grumble grumble but I have to encourage the baby steps..."
