Sports Illustrated Celebrates 50th Anniversary With Ass-Centric Cover

Latest

Yes, we saw Barbie on the cover of Sports Illustrated, but it was just a promotional ad. Obviously SI wants real live flesh-and-boob ladies on the cover of the 50th anniversary issue. Here they are: Nina Agdal, Lily Aldridge and Chrissy Teigen. And while traditionally, Sports Illustrated covers showcase breasts, this cover is all about buttocks.

Ass-stastic! From the SI website:

K, so, which of you would you say really got the cover?
[Laughter]
Lily: “All of us!”
Chrissy: “If I were to pick . . . I would have to say our butts won it.”

Looking back at fifty years of covers, only 2 issues have featured women posing with their backsides facing the camera: Ann Simonton in 1974 and Veronika Vařeková in 2004.

You could argue that Vařeková’s doesn’t even really count, since her torso is twisted. Still, this is an interesting development in the evolution of “sexy,” as seen by Sports Illustrated. Sure, you see the side of Nina Agdal’s breast, but there are no buts about it: The 2014 cover celebrates the derrière. Butts have been around a loooooong-ass time, and go in-and-out of style, when it comes to mainstream focus. Yet this proves, as previously discussed, the ass is having another pop culture moment.
