Radio Host Offers Rachel Jeantel Full College Scholarship

Latest

Radio host Tom Joyner was “so moved” by Rachel Jeantel’s interview with Piers Morgan last night that he has offered the 19-year-old a scholarship.

In an interview this morning (audio here), Joyner expressed his disappointment in the fact that when Piers Morgan asked Jeantel what she and Trayvon Martin talked about — and she replied they they talked about their plans for the future — Morgan didn’t ask the follow-up question: What does Rachel Jeantel want for her future?

Jeantel’s attorney told Joyner that Jeantel originally wanted to go into law enforcement. Joyner then got on the phone with Jeantel, told her that he loved her, and said that he would like to pay for her to attend a Historically Black College or University:

If you want to graduate from high school, and go to an HBCU, even if it’s not in Florida but especially Florida, like Florida Memorial, Edward Waters or FAMU, if you want to do that, I want to help you do that.
I will help you get tutors to get you out of high school, tutors to help you pass the SAT and I will give you a full ride scholarship to any HBCU you’d like.

Rachel Jeantel said thank you, but seemed to be in shock. In case you’re wondering, Joyner is deeply committed to education; he has foundation that supports HBCU and awards “full ride scholarships.” Fingers crossed that this actually happens. It seems that there are many people rooting for Rachel Jeantel, and her success might be a salve that starts healing the pain from the Zimmerman trial.
