Who is Sending Death Threats to Female AME Pastors in South Carolina?

Latest

A local news station is reporting that three female pastors of African Methodist Episcopal churches in Clarendon County, South Carolina have received threatening letters. The letter-writer, who calls himself “Apostle Prophet Harry L. Fleming,” quotes Bible verses to claim that women shouldn’t be pastors, and warns that if they don’t stop, “you and your children will die”.

The threats come during a week of suspicious fires at black churches across the South. WLTX reports that pastors of the Greater Union Cypress AME Church, Society Hill AME Church, and Reeseville AME Church have all received the letters. There are several people in U.S. census records named Harry L. Fleming, but most are deceased.

The Clarendon County Sheriff’s office told the station it’s looking into who “Harry L. Fleming” is, and will post deputies at each church. Cut it out, America.
