Transgender Woman Invites Councilman to Stone Her, Even Brings Stone

In December, the city council of Shreveport, Louisiana passed an ordinance banning housing and employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. What great news! Everyone in Shreveport must be throwing dance parties in the name of progress and RuPaul’s Supermodel (You Better Work) — because employment equality! — is probably playing 24/7 from every speaker in town! Ehh, not quite.

The Advocate reports that while the ordinance was passed in a 6-1 vote, there’s always someone intent on ruining the fun (and by fun I mean, of course, equal housing and employment opportunities. That kind of fun). In this case, it was City Councilman Ron Webb who doesn’t seem to get that whole separation of church and state craze that’s been sweeping the nation.

During the council’s debate last December, Webb voiced his opposition, saying, “The Bible tells you homosexuals are an abomination,” adding that he does not socialize with LGBT people, according to TV station KSLA.

In fact, Councilman Webb was so opposed to socializing with gay people that he authored a proposal to repeal the new policy.

Enter Pamela Raintree, a trans woman who joined dozens of others on Tuesday to protest the repeal. And she challenged Webb to put his money where his mouth is:

“Leviticus 20:13 states, ‘If a man also lie with mankind as he lieth with a woman, they shall surely put him to death,'” Raintree began. “I brought the first stone, Mr. Webb, in case that your Bible talk isn’t just a smoke screen for personal prejudices.”

That’s right! She brought the first stone! Faced with the decision to publicly throw rocks at a law-abiding citizen of Shreveport or withdraw his repeal proposal, Webb chose to do the latter. Good Choice! Equality is always a much less bloody choice than a public stoning! (Is Tide hiring slogan writers? Because that one could be a winner!)
