The View's Take on the Bill Cosby Rape Allegations Was Fucking Inane

Monday’s episode of The View was an excellent representation of the old adage, If you don’t have something smart to say, shut the fuck up.

Here are some things the women–who have all demonstrated the ability to say smart and capable things before–said while discussing the new rape allegations against Bill Cosby, a powerful man in their industry:

Social media is the real issue here.

Rosie Perez: You know what’s crazy for me though, is whether the allegations are true or not, is the fact that the venom that the public has when they go on social media. It’s as if you are guilty until proven innocent. And if these are true, I hope these women have their day in court and he gets the punishment–but if it’s not true, a lot of people have rushed to judgment.

This is a sad day and I probably shouldn’t be weighing in at all.

Nicolle Wallace: Either 13 women were raped by somebody too powerful to face the full weight of criminal justice system or an innocent man is being falsely accused. This is either a tragedy or a tragedy. I sort of hate being part of the conversation about these stories; it makes me sweat. I don’t know what the truth is.

Wait, what happens when you’re raped?

Whoopi Goldberg: [In response to a clip of Joan Tarshis saying she didn’t think anyone would believe her claims] Perhaps the police might have believed it, or the hospital, where you go…don’t you do a kit, when you say someone was raped, don’t the police–

Rosie Perez: A rape kit, that’s what it’s called.

Whoopi Goldberg: Isn’t that the next step once you make an allegation, don’t the cops take you into the hospital for–

Rosie O’Donnell: Yes, they definitely do that.

There are a lot of unanswered questions here.

Whoopi Goldberg: I have a lot of questions for the lady. Maybe she’ll come on [the show].

I hope there is justice for this lady, I hope somebody gets to the bottom of this, but I’m going to reserve my judgment because I have a lot of questions, as I said. It’s crazy, but I have a lot of questions.

We’ll know when we know, and that’s what I know.

Rosie O’Donnell: When you are a famous person, and you are friends with a famous person who gets accused, that is an awkward position to be in, especially if you are on a show talking about current events.

When they’re your friends, it is a very difficult thing. Because the allegations are serious, and then they’re your friends and, you know, what do you do?
