Argh. These are my people and the reason why I never went to the prom or any fucking reuinions. Or maybe because I was stoned throughout high school. And the whole gay thing. I grew up in Yonkers,* and letmetellyou, this is exactly how it was, how it is, and how it shall always be. Only it happens in a parking lot. Behind the strip mall. Under a sulfurous cloud of hairspray and cigarette smoke.
*Rich, Yonkers is hair on the louse that is clinging to one of the armpits' hairs.
My older brother was a bouncer at a club in the late 80s early 90s. He and his friends all dressed like this. Bad taste was to be found all along the Eastern seaboard, apparently. (We lived near Boston)
I spent all my summers growing up in Ocean City. This just confirms my stereotype that the kids who went to Wildwood were way trashier than us Ocean City kids.
Also, I just spent my bachelorette weekend in Atlantic City. We spent half the trip asking each other, "So, where would one buy a leather backless mini dress?"
I have always wanted to go to Wildwood (and I still do), but as a kid, my mom would always tell me about how bad it was there. We always went to Ocean City, so it was the polar opposite of Wildwood.
And now I totally believe everything my mom said about it.
@Shamrockette: If you guys go, can we start making a list of gifts for you to bring back? I would like some inappropriate iron on t-shirt referencing either my own breasts or the genitalia of a man. You will get half credit for a tee shirt referencing how much I like to party in a "clever" way. :)
@Shamrockette: Wasn't Ocean City dry? I think that's why it had the reputation for being a family place. Not that we didn't just load up on the booze before we got there.
Yeah... I spent a fair amount of time down the shore around those years. Me and my friends would completely doll up to go to Wildwood (we'd usually stay in a more family friendly city like Sea Isle) and LOVED IT. We flirted mercilessly with boys and wore too much make up. And although I so wanted to buy various inappropriate tees on the Boardwalk, I think I got some "party" shirt and was promptly embarassed and never wore it.
I took some poor souls to walk the boardwalk in Wildwood some years ago. It was the funniest freaking thing ever. They were appalled by my beach trips.
@WaltzingMatilda(theOriginal): same here wildwood and seaside whenever i went to my dad's for the summers. zeppolis are probably the greatest invention ever.
My family went to Wildwood every year for vacation while I was growing up. I haven't been in years, but my memories have made it out to be quite an idyllic place. Now I realize that either a) my mind is playing tricks on me, or b) I had really, really interesting taste as a child.
I'm going to Atlantic City for the first time tomorrow, and I look forward to confirming that every single person in New Jersey does, in fact, conform to their respective stereotypes.

Yes, everyone. YES, IN YOUR LOCAL MALL.
God.

The worst trouble I got into in Ocean City was flirting with the boys in the house next door, having my first kiss and playing cards until 5 am.
[now I am fully engulfed in shore nostalgia]

But that still didn't stop me from wanting to go there.
