Okay, I must admit: I don't hate Katy Perry as much as others. Oh, she's not a fantastic singer, her music is disposable, "I kissed a girl" is lipstick lesbianism at it's silliest, and her use of 'ur so gay' is dumb.
But she writes a mean hook (I can't stop singing "I do not hook up", and, you know, the whole "OMG WHAT A FAME WHORE!" stuff - aren't they ALL? She's fulfilling her duty as a major labor pop star, and doing it professionally. She gets attention, but she has not done anything truly assinine.
I believe her when she says she's for gay rights - she comes from a very right wing background, and I'll bet all the discussion and backlash against her songs has been very eye-opening.
Just... there's so much love and defense of Britney Spears(as an example), of all people, around here. Who, from things she's said to things she does, makes me wince. Pity her, yes, but wince. She's an unimpressive mess, she leans very conservative, and she's stuck in her own neurotic head, no matter what the cause.
And Katy Perry gets RIPPED APART, despite having sinned far less. Why is that, seriously? She's said many things I agree with, and she's not a stupid chicky.
So: Team Katy. If only because I don't get the *LEVEL* of bile.
@NoelleBlue: Heh, my point(Sorry to double-post) - In this particular situation with Beth Ditto, despite her prodigious talent, Katy Perry isn't the one who's coming off as a ****-stirring fame whore.
@NoelleBlue: Having a mental disorder is considered "sinning" now? I prefer Britney Spears over Katy Perry because she knows just what she is. She's someone who sings mindless pop songs and doesn't hide behind causes to do so. Perry, on the other hand, appropriates gay culture to suit her needs.
No. All of Britney Spear's bad behavior can not be dismissed as "mental disorder". I am judging her character, not her mental state. Her history in the spotlight is long, and her breakdowns do not a whole woman make. She is more complicated than that by far, and I'm not impressed by much of who she's been. Yes, I think they're different, character and mental state. And I think both point to Ms. Spears knowing very little about who she is, nor ever having a chance to figure it out. However, she came out in support gay marriage, and I'm impressed - sounds like she's growing up.
Katy Perry is also complicated, and yes, she wrote two songs that referred to gay culture in a very offhand, teenager-ry way that's immature and shallow. But I believe her when she says she is dedicated to gay rights, and if starting with those silly songs and then going deeper into the issue with her fans makes some young people think harder, she's done something. She is 24 years old - she has a lot of growing up to do.
These are very young women. They are very famous. Their lives are messy. They're often jerks. Like I said, my issue is with the level of loathing, and the scattershot application of it.
@NoelleBlue: Not to be one of "those" people but actually Kelly Clarkson sings " I Do Not Hook Up". Does that change your opinion of her at all? (No snark; actually wondering)
I read it elsewhere, some interview with Kelly Clarkson where she said it was dropped from Perry's album because it didn't fit the flirtier, sexier feel, so she was happy to pick it up. (EW, maybes?)
But I think it shows that much of what she's presenting is a pop persona!
(And quick note to Evie Havok, sorry if my response is more confrontational than necessary, I'm in a mood tonight, which is no excuse)
@CordeliaShirley: That was my thought. Just the other day I was thinking, you know, Self? There haven't been enough movies about runaway trains/modes of transportation. I need another one NOW.
@Snowbunny: It's been pointed out on the show before by the other housewives, but for a woman who "wrote" a book about etiquette, the Countess sure is rude!
I think all real etiquette experts agree that it is better to be polite and charming than to know which fork is the shrimp fork.
@Lazy Line Painter Jane: Exactly. Now, I hate Kelly, but really LuAnn, did't you read your own book? (See, in this context that burn actually works, unlike when Kelly seized it out of herself.)
I'm sure that Katy Perry would have been much more impressed if Beth Ditto said that Katy should hang herself with her H&M scarf, instead of actually saying something that was intelligent.
Sorry, but that song pisses me off something fierce.
When Michael Hutchene died I remember debating with my friends whether you would prefer to think someone you knew committed suicide as a deliberate choice or preferred to think they had died accidentally of auto aspysication.(sp) That practice came to British attention when the corpse of a member of parliament was found semi naked, dressed in women's underwear with a satsuma stuffed in his mouth. Apparently the sharp taste of the citrus was supposed to revive him if he fell unconscious. I don't think I have heard of a woman dying in this way. The fact that strangulation causes men to have an erection made execution by hanging a shameful death and aristocrats were given the more dignified death by the axe. [www.newsmedianews.com]
@chritter is a nocturnal feminist mancatfish: See, I thought he actually WAS Bill and when I got this news I was like "Way to be late to the party, world, everybody knows you take three steps and die."
Are you supposed to be "impressed" by an insult? Like if someone called me a pompous jerk-face butt-nugget hairy ass-hole would I say "impressive!" but also "hey, that's not nice." It would be so confusing to be a celebrity in a feud, I think.
@Mmmmkay (gellin' and Jezebelin): If someone came up with such an amusing and imaginative insult it made me smile in site of myself, I woud be impressed and secretly vowing to use it on ssmeone else.
@CubeRootOfPi: I feel most sorry for the poor maid who found Carradine's corpse. I very much doubt if she will be given counselling or paid time off to recover from the tremendous shock.
