From the NYT: Rep. Diana DeGette (Colo.) said she has collected more than 40 signatures from House Democrats vowing to oppose any final bill that includes the amendment -- enough to block passage.
She'll be getting a nice thank you note from me. #nancykeenan
@PaintedTrollop: seriously I get emails from them every day practically. And its all, you need to do this and call this person etc etc...I'm all for grass roots and I understand that they can't do it without our help, but what is NARAL actually doing besides sending emails? #nancykeenan
@bluebears: I've often wondered this as well. They keep hitting me up for money. And it's not like "hey can you spot us ten bucks?" It's "Oh were looking for 150 bucks." Excuse me? I'm basically unemployed and in college. I can't just magic that kind of cash. I give them money when I can and even then I'm not sure what it does. #nancykeenan
I say we take Rachel Maddow up on the suggestion she made during Meet The Press: REVOLT! ORGANIZE ME, NARAL! I am tireless and REALLY ANNOYING when you get me on the phone! #nancykeenan
@PilgrimSoul: My problem with that is wondering what the fuck they're going to DO with my donation. Lobby some more? Hell of a lot of good that did w/ the House. They're not going to convince pro-lifer senators/reps to support abortion unless they knock up said pro-lifers' teenage daughters and thereby give their dads a gut check. Hey, there's an idea… #nancykeenan
@Kivrin: Hell, are they gonna support Joe Lieberman again? I like Lincoln Chafee, but his vote doesn't jive with how a NARAL board member should be voting. #nancykeenan
@Kivrin: This wasn't an issue of failed lobbying. This was a bill pushed by the administration that Democratic leadership was told "must" pass. Failure in the House would have meant failure of the President, his budding health care policies and the Democratic Party. It would have resulted serious repercussions among the public; how can you fail to pass health care reform when you control Congress and the White House.
When it was clear that allowing the Stupak Amendment to pass would make the bill more palatable for one Republican and a number of Blue Dogs that voted for it, the leadership figured they would lose the battle and win the war.
Gratefully, 41 progressive Democrats have signed a letter to Speaker Pelosi indicating that they will not support a final bill that contains the Stupak Amendment provisions. If NARAL and Planned Parenthood want to make this an issue, they need to be in constant communication with these offices to ensure that these Members mean what they say- regardless of what else they are offered. Hopefully, any donations you would give would support this effort; the bill cannot pass if this group of 41 remains strong and unified. #nancykeenan
I want to get up from my desk, grab my coworkers, and run into the street where I could join thousands of others marching towards the Capitol. #nancykeenan
How is the Stupak amendment legal, exactly? I can understand abortions not being paid for on public health plans, but the article I just read said it would "limit abortion coverage even for women paying for it without government subsidies." Um, what? How can you stop people from paying for abortions with their own money? #nancykeenan
@katie.scarlett.o'hara: Because a lot of the private insurers will presumably remove abortion coverage from their plans, period—since some of the people who want to buy those plans will be doing so with gov't subsidies. #nancykeenan
@katie.scarlett.o'hara: I feel like it's the same way Jim Crow Laws operated. You can totally vote/get an abortion if you can just pass this little test/make it past the intimidation forces/pay for it yourself poor women. You can still get one, it's just impossible for many and not practical for all. #nancykeenan
@Kivrin: This is infuriating. I mean, there has to be some compromise if this thing is going to be passed at all, but there is no need to be more restrictive than the status quo re: federal funding already is. #nancykeenan
@katie.scarlett.o'hara: "Paying for it" meant paying for insurance coverage, not abortion. The amendment does nothing to prevent a woman from paying for an abortion. It prevents insurance coverage of abortions in the insurance plans available on the exchange. The plans on the exchange are supposed to be how small businesses and individuals purchase affordable coverage. #nancykeenan
Hey, NARAL - Organize a massive protest in DC. ASAP. I will let strangers sleep on my couch. I want to do something about this, and once again, the District of Columbia has no voice in these matters. #nancykeenan
@CherriSpryte: If NARAL and/or PP organize something, I'm there. Er, not on your couch. But hopefully with you and the other Northeast-corridor Jezebels.

Look at who they invited to be on their board and how those officials voted - not very pro-choice friendly.
I'm disappointed...
