I went to college with Darby, the actress pictured. My husband and I were in the theatre dept. with her, he had a crush on her (before I knew him). I tease him about it, but don't blame him at all. Let me say - her skin can totally live up to anything HD can throw at her.

In the early/mid 80's I went to a symposium at UCLA on HD. At the time it was futuristic, yeah they were already doing it on film but the idea that we would all have HDTV was what seemed far off. Now I can't watch a non HDTV it's all fuzzy and looks like shit.

Maybe the reality check of what actors/celebs really look like will do us all some good, get rid of all this unobtainable perfect crap so many aspire to these days.

Gimmicky is a weird way to describe an advance in technology is what I"m saying.

The reason HD TV looks so ridiculously "detailed" compared to film, is that it is very hard for digital cameras to shoot a soft, or unfocused, image- digital ccd's tent to capture everything sharply (when it's in focus). Just think of your snapshot digital camera. To call HD more detailed than film is erroneous: film has far more color depth and focal range than hd, and can shoot crisp details very well, depending on how it is used. HD doesn't have the ability to retain general sharp and colorful details while still softening some parts of the image- you just get this hyperrealistic sharp scary cold image of the world with over-bold color. The technology is starting to improve in this regard, but it still sucks compared to film (I work in post-production).

ALso, HD is not a catchall term - it makes me laugh, the way people describe everything as "HD." HD describes a range of resolutions in digital photography. HD TV is a much lower resolution than HD for films. HD merely refers to the resolution of the image, and there are wild differences between cameras, formats, etc all under the "hd" tent.

@Super_Kitten: Thanks for sharing your expertise! I found this info really interesting. I haven't had much experience with HDTV, but from what I've heard about it, it doesn't seem to be that great for most things besides nature shows and some sports, so I was wondering why everyone's so jazzed.

Oh man, I never knew that people from the Olden Days had dreams in black and white.

Just one more piece of evidence in the whole "the media brainwashes you without you even knowing it! don't try to tell me that you magically avoided being socialized or subconsciously affected by watching 20 hours of tv a week when you were a kid! It's in your brain! It's shaping your dreeeeeeeaaams!" bag of tricks I occasionally pull out.

I haven't seen much in HD, since I am one of "those" (i.e. people who last bought a TV 18 years ago). BUT, I do notice that the local news channels have changed their sets, and changed even how they dress for HD. Lots of bright, shiny fabrics now.

Also, I totally forgot about this: With the advent of HD TV, we're looking at a whole lot of Photoshop work being done behind scenes. The work will have to improve drastically, as will the programs. Right now, the work is very inconsistent - if you want to see a real good example, watch Sweeney Todd on an HD screen. You can see the blurry smudges where they tried smoothing out Depp's and Bonham-Carter's complexions, and the blurry spots wander from cheeks to foreheads to cheeks again.

The idea of being a make-up artist is so fascinating to me. They're working on a canvas that's extremely temperamental, going to move and get moist and oily -- and they work, most of the time, with an extremely narrow color palette. And with those limitations, the effects they can create are insane!

My dad recently fulfilled is year-long dream and bought a high definition TV. The first time I watched a show on it, I swear to God I nearly fell off the couch. The sets look so fake all of the sudden. I could see much more detail. The colors were bright and in my face. Older shows suddenly appeared much flatter than they had before.

I'm not sure if I like it or find it absolutely disturbing.
