The thing is, casual fashion nowadays seems to trend towards para-militaristic stuff. I mean, there are epaulettes all over the place and drab, drab, drab all over.
Spring 2010 had better have some colors. But what? We already went through a retro pastelish/Fruit-Stripe-gummish phase.... Hmmm... Color bets?
I agree that Christian Bale is probably doing unhealthy methods for weight manipulation. the solution, obviously, is for him to come over my place, where I will closely monitor his sandwich intake and whenever necessary replace the calories with calorie-free fur burgers.
If Mark Wahlberg, who turned himself into a scarecrow for a two minute shot in the Sixth Sense, is worried about Christian, I think Christian should pay attention and maybe have a peanut butter sammich.
Paul Peterson of A Minor Consideration has always come off a bit "off" to me, if you know what I mean. He was a child star in the 60s and his money and his life were grievously mismanaged. Now he's on a mission to pretty much stop all use of children in entertainment. He thinks all parents of child stars are evil and are out to abuse their kids. I think it's obscene that a third party, *strangers*, can horn themselves into a family and tell them what to do with their kids. If the Sulman kids need rescuing, a govn't agency with trained social workers should be there making judgment calls, not a bunch of lawyers on a jihad.
@BytheSea: Hate myself for knowing this, but I'm pretty sure that was *Donnie* Wahlberg, of NKOTB and Mark-Wahlberg's-brother fame.
Apparently, he thought such intense committment to a bit role would secure his reputation as an actor, when it mostly secured his reputation for trying way too hard.
If Christian Bale is a method actor, I hate to think about what he did to himself to prepare for his role in The Machinist, in which he played an insomniac who weighed 100 pounds.
@fivebyfive: he weighed 120 pounds. He wanted to get down to 100 but the director wouldn't let him because they thought he would die. He was eventually eating only a bit of tuna fish and an apple a day, so at least there was no need for a doctor.
@fivebyfive: He went anorexic, basically. He talked in interviews about how hard it was for his wife at mealtimes when she was eating normally and he was picking at whatever tiny bit of food he was eating.
Anyone have any insight on why Shutter Island was moved to February? I saw the preview for it before 'Inglourious Basterds' yesterday and was excited to go see it, but was then shocked to see February as the released date at the end. With Scorsese and DiCaprio, it seems like such obvious Oscar bait, and February is where terrible movies go to die. So what gives? Is it bad? Production problems? Huh?
@pssshwhatever: Is Scorsese even capable of making a bad movie? I'm wondering.
Paramount is saying they don't have the money to mount an Oscar campaign for it right now, but wouldn't a film released in October with a very minimal Oscar campaign have a better chance than something released in February that the Academy has forgotten about by the time Oscar noms roll around 11 months later?
And I was awfully excited about this film. Scorsese? Ruffalo? Michelle Williams? I'm SO there.
It makes me extremely uncomfortable that so many details of Jasmine Fiore's muder are being publicized. I can only imagine what it must be like to lose a family member or friend and then be constantly confronted with all the gruesome details of her death.
@Rabbitty: If it helps catch him, then it is probably worth it. He won't be able to travel without someone recognizing him, and after hearing those details he will be lucky if he is not tracked down by an angry mob.
@AmbiguouslyGayUno: Yeah, when you're competing with Imelda Marcos for sheer wastefulness, maybe that's something you should keep between you and your therapist.
Oh, Spencer and Heidi! They're such characters! It must be nice to be so fundamentally inconsequential that you can say virtually anything and no one will take it as an insult. I'm sure Angelina is quite pleased not to linger under the appreciative gaze of Pratt. I think that Heidi and Spencer can say that they eat yogurt-dipped babies and puppies and no one would give a damn, 'cause they're soooo full of poopy anyway.
Hey Mark Wahlberg, if you really want to help your friend, you need to produce a movie where a very buff Christian Bale sits around giving monologues about his deep love for women, and then swims laps in a pool. Naked. Trust me, it will help a lot.
So that advocacy group has the right to at least file a petition but that doesn't mean a judge is going to grant them financial guardianship over the Suleman horde/pack/gaggle or whatever herd group name is appropriate for minor children.
I wonder if CA is more likely to grant financial guardianship to a non blood relative due to the precedent of child actor/labor laws?
@Dauphine: I was surprised anyone who went to the lengths he did to destroy identifying parts of her body would report her missing. Then police would be expecting her and get DNA from her family when a possible match turned up.
@midwesternmom: Especially with the time it takes to remove teeth, whether by destroying the mandibular and maxillary areas of the skull, or actually pulling them out.
@Dauphine: I wonder if it had less to do about identification and more about pleasure. Sick, I know, but that makes more sense than him trying to make identification harder.
@Diziet_Sma: I can't think of a weirder movie to remake at this point than Excalibur...other than possibly Nothing But Trouble. They're like bad fever dreams.
Why doesn't someone do a GOOD movie about King Arthur? We're like..0 for 5 at this point.
@SomeAuthorGirl: I think the one I'm most pissed about is The Dark Is Rising...not an Arthurian tale exactly, though it uses Arthurian legend (and Arthur, for that matter) and mythology for a lot of its own world building...but that Seeker thing was a hideous mess. There was absolutely no reason to do what they did with it.
But beyond that, it's like you get Excalibur...overwrought and overdone and just kind of weird and unpleasant...(though Helen Mirren was awesome)...or you get that thing with Richard Gere. Awful.
@tiredfairy: Ooh, what a good word for the Arthurian movies to date: unpleasant. I mean, seriously, why? There are so many terrific book series that could have been adapted? Why create crap?
I will admit that I am strangely addicted to the Merlin series, which is a tad humiliating. I'm still bitter about the way The Mists of Avalon got utterly fucked, jesus... that's the one I hold anger about. You know what would make a good series if they didn't fuck it up? The Stephen R Lawhead Arthurian cycle.
Dear Production World,
Please make a halfway decent Arthurian movie/series before we die? Please?
@SomeAuthorGirl: It seems like movie folks really don't get what's appealing about the Arthurian legend/s. They either go the overwrought fantasy route, or the "based on a true story" historical fiction route, and none of it works. Because they all ignore the core of the stories and focus on battles instead. And I like a good battle, but that story needs to be handled the way LOTR was or it just doesn't become compelling.
@tiredfairy: Actually, Excaliber is one of my all-time favourite movies. It's genuinely odd and wholly original. John Boorman is a brilliant director with a unique vision.
@Diziet_Sma: That's fair too (and I agree that it's odd and original, at least). I think constant remakes (whether I like the original or not) have got to stop. I haven't seen too many that worked... The Thomas Crown Affair being one of the exceptions.
I can appreciate that Excalibur was trying for a different look and tone, and there are some things about it that are certainly compelling when you look at it in context. It just doesn't work for me overall. I dont't think it does the Arthur mythology much service, and a lot the acting just leaves me cold. It's not the worst movie ever made, but I just find it to be...too much.
But I think we can both agree that Bryan Singer should stay far away from it. :}
