Im confused as how the settlers could have "hurled the family's belongings out onto the street" since the previous occupants left in November 08...[www.jpost.com]#sheikhjarrah
The article clearly says that the Al Kurds moved out Nov 08. So of course they werent throwing out the families belongings. Just rumors being reported as fact. #sheikhjarrah
I was pretty flabbergasted when I found out recently that Israeli parades go through Muslim areas.
Who thinks that's a good idea?
I know Northern Ireland is not really that comparable to Israel/Palestine, but reigning in the marching season was one of the earlier steps to their peace process. It seems like a pretty obvious good move to not hold contentious marches in neighborhoods that might be upset by them. There must be a possible parade route in Jerusalem that doesn't go through any Muslim neighborhoods.
@clevernamehere: Agreed. Parades are about territorial supremacy, and are still contentious in NI but nothing like previously. This seems unnecessarily provocative.
@clevernamehere: I could be mistaken, but it could be a march to the former site of the Temple which would make sense in which case getting there without passing a Muslim area would be close to impossible.
Sukkot is a harvest holiday in which Ancient Israelites/Judeans/Jews would bring their fall harvest sacrifices to the Temple (pre- 70 CE when it was destroyed by the Romans). So I could see carrying on that tradition, in spite of the fact that there is no Temple anymore.
Also, Muslim doesn't mean Palestinian. There are lots and lots of Muslims in Israel. 32% of Jerusalem is Muslim and there's a lot of interaction.
@clevernamehere: The parade is nothing compared to the fact that Israel is actually demolishing homes in these neighborhoods and building Jewish homes on top of them. AND not giving Muslims building permits for their own homes in the area.
I have to say the bias at gawker and jezebel against Israel...and at times, the Jewish people in general...is pissing me off. There is about 0 cultural sensitivity. You can't say "eat a sandwich," but you can shit on someone's religion. Nice.
@mischiefmanager: What part about our ancient religion isn't primitive? And it just so happens that this is a ritual only done by a mere fraction of Jews. My comment speaks more to the common theme that runs in gawker and jezebel - Israel sucks, Jews are weird. I'm over it.
The boy behind them has the longest peyos I have ever seen.
PETA actually launched a campaign in Hassidic neighborhoods in Brooklyn to try to change this tradition to giving money. As far as I can tell, it's not being real well received...a lot of people feel it's a threat to their traditions.
@mermil: Then PETA should rethink its campaign. I'm sure a Hasidic woman, naked with cash on her ladybits, should work. The tag line could read:
"Cash covers my sin better than chickens."
@deeemer: Thanks for the Anti-Semitism. We just didn't have enough in these last hundred years. I thought Jezebel readers were more enlightened than this.
@LaComtesse: Just because a woman is naked doesn't make it sexist, and they have used naked men in their campaigns, too. Using sex for advertising might not be your cup of tea, but it isn't automatically sexist any more than photographing a naked person for art is.
That joke anti-Semitic, plain and simple. I can only hope the person behind it isn't.
@roxythekiller: Yeah. I'm sorry you feel hurt, but you've taken this totally out of context. Perhaps you should look up some of the PETA tags on Jezebel- there's a pretty clear prevailing opinion of PETA's work on this site, and the joke was most certainly a reference to that. If you read the other articles, there's a lot of precedence for PETA jokes.
I read about this tradition in The Year of Living Biblicly! That's how I learned 99% of what I know about Jewish culture, since I was educated at Catholic schools.
Also, I just listened to last year's Thanksgiving episode of This American Life, all about poultry, and now I can't see a chicken without thinking it's magical.
@taranwanderer: Oddly enough I was only thinking today how the V sign in the UK must relate to legs being wide open to receive the penis, whereas the American single digit surely relates to the penis itself. Interesting how different societies develop different gestures for what is fundamentally the same abusive insult.

No matter how logical the parade route is from a religious perspective, it doesn't seem worth stirring up bad blood in an already contentious region.
