    My hubby runs marathons, has done two ultra marathons (50K). I can't imagine him removing his toenails. He just keeps them super short. And deals with the bruises and blisters like any other runner. Geesh.

    @sassyredhead: I actually had this done because I have super thin big toenails - best decision of my life. I am now completely pain free and never have to worry about them growing back. It was initially, during the procedure, very alarming, but after it had healed I am 110%. It looks completely clean and bare now. #cervarix

    @JoStockton: They've been accused of it, not proven---and it's based on the suspicions of somebody who noticed similarities in their stories. Well, guess what? Abusers tend to abuse in the same ways. It works, that's why. What next? A rape victim gets called a liar because she claims the rapist penetrated her, just like some other victim claimed? #cervarix

    @Ginmar Rienne: From what it sounds like, the issue isn't that their stories are similar, the issue is that the paperwork and documentation is virtually identical. While a lot of people's stories might be similar, everyone tells their own story in a different way. It sounds like the descriptions were verbatim, which is what tweaked someone.

    I'm inclined to believe that the people who work in the field that would be in a position to catch this kind of fraud would be very wary of falsely accusing someone of falsifying claims of abuse.

    The reality is that resources for protecting women who are abused are so thin on the ground anyway, and if these women were actually doing this, it's pretty heinous. Especially if they're trading on the idea that no one will challenge their story, because it's not PC to. #cervarix

    @Ginmar Rienne: It's not similarities in their stories. It's similarities in the forged documents they used to make their cases. According to the NY Times, a court-issued temporary order of protection, a domestic incident report from the Police Department and a letter from Safe Horizon, an agency that works with domestic violence victims that were included in these women's applications were all forged. Yes, they are innocent until proven guilty, but there was enough evidence to arrest them for forgery.

    @Maritsa: I had a boyfriend in college who donated sperm to make money - you go in and fill out a form, then make your deposit. Whereas egg donation requires you to fill out like a 5 page form, get approved, come in to give your full family medical history, have a medical exam, etc. For some reason it's much more rigorous. #cervarix

Ugh, it makes me sick to think that people will honestly get more outraged at animal abuse (which is terrible but IMO not greater than human suffering) than at domestic violence and rape. Or that the US and our shit for brains drug policy crowds already overcrowded and underfunded prisons with drug abusers and as a result has to let violent, repeat offenders out early. Policy fail. #gardasil

    @La Chica Lucy: I worked with a couple guys convicted of rape (two different jobs), one got probation for confining and raping a woman with his friend, the other served two years of a ten year sentence for drugging/getting drunk underage boys and raping them. In comparison, serving 80 years is a pretty harsh sentence.

    Just to be clear, the NC change in life sentences was not by the legislature, but was a change in interpretation by the Courts. The law says an 80 year sentence is a life sentence, and so they're now going to treat it that way. (The AG argued it just meant eligibility for parole, not the length of the sentence.) The article is very fear-monger-y. All the people mentioned have been in prison for over 30 years and are eligible because of good time credits. Also, 80 years is relatively high compared to most other life sentences I've seen which are often more like 25, 30, or 40 years. #gardasil

    @jleigh: All valid points. And yet, I still don't think that a convicted rapist (much less a convicted child rapist) should ever be released back into society again, even if they have been on good behavior (although it might be difficult to be on "bad behavior" since there usually aren't girls in prison to rape). That's just not what "life sentence" should mean. #gardasil

    @5ft of fury: Do we know that the men themselves weren't children or near-children when the rapes occured? The age of the girl remains the same but the man grows older, so while a 17 year old man raping a 14 year old girlfriend is disgusting, it's not quite the same as a 57 year old man who, according to the books, is known for raping 14 year olds. Other jezzies have pointed out that the justice system often doesn't account for this, turning a technical pedo by really a rapist into a psychotic monster on the books. #gardasil

    @BytheSea: It looks like all the rapes involving children were B1 Felonies in North Cackilacki which means that the defendant was at least 12 years-old and at least 4 years older than the victim.

    The 9 year old was raped by a 21 year old and the 15 year old was raped by a 22 year old. Haven't looked into the rest.

    My head is all for strict interpretation of the constitution; my heart is pissed because a violent crime is a violent crime. #gardasil

    @winner: But a 57 year old who committed one sexual assault when he was 20, against someoen who was close to his age, is morelikely to be rehabilitated and less lkely to committ a crimeagain than a 57 year old who raped a 14 year old. #gardasil
