Good for her. When I watch evening news, I watch her. I was angry on her behalf with the "She wrecked the news!" theme coming out of well, everywhere, and I'm glad to see that her style is finally getting the credit its due.
Plus, she's not afraid to say she's a feminist. That counts for a lot, in my book.
I want to like Katie Couric, for all of the reasons stated in this post, but I can't. Let me tell you a little story - my brother went to Virginia Tech and yes, he was there for the shooting. Immediately following, one of his friends, who had interned at CBS in the past and had hoped to intern there in the future, was asked by CBS to find friends of the victims to speak on camera. She, understandably, felt uncomfortable doing this and refused. She then received a call from Katie Couric, who snidely asked her if she'd like to lose her internship next summer. I realize that Ms. Couric is a reporter and it's her job to find stories - but to try to take advantage of a witness to a school shooting is revolting. I can't forgive her and I can't respect her.
@susanstohelit: First rule of journalism: if you're not prepared to sell our grandmother for a story, you're not a journalist. You've gotta have that killer instinct, otherwise you're screwed.
Oh, I see what the Washington Post is doing here. They want to congratulate her while also acknowledging the fact that she's short. Also, so that it doesn't seem like they're writing a Big Serious Article on Li'l Katie Couric, they are subtly undermining her from the start.
Women are streotypically emotional. Stereotypes have doses of truth and I'm not trying to say that "emotional" = bad, crazy, bonerkiller feminist. But, Katie has the freedom to bring more emotion and be more empathetic in interviews because she's a woman, IMO. It seems like CBS didn't want her to do that at the outset and is now realizing that it makes people more engaged with the news.
"A woman's touch" is one of those phrases that makes me want to break something. What does that even mean in this context? Soft lighting? Scented candles? The interview taking place on The View?
I want Lil Wayne to give Katie some Purple "Drank" to "slow her roll." They bottle that stuff now and sell it in convenience stores here in Texas as a relaxation beverage. It was even in the New Yorker.
Apparently energy beverages like Red Bull were cool during the housing boom, but now everyone just wants to relax during these tough times. I've been drinking it to cure my insomnia and its actually working. Obvs. the kind Lil Wayne drinks is the codeine-promethazine mix, but the bottled kind is just rosehips and melatonin. I say this because I read somewhere that Couric has struggled with insomnia in the past due to being on the crazy sleeping schedule during the Today show years.
@Khrushchev: Yea, now that I think about it, once a person is dubbed "America's Sweetheart" bad things follow. Poor Jen is constantly getting dumped and Katie Couric was almost fired.
That being said, Bgirl_Hamster is withdrawing from the America's Sweetheart competition.
