    @redqueenmeg: pesticides are lipophilic, so the amount dissolved in water will be infinitesimally smaller than the amount that can be found in fatty breast milk

    Why does the person with the boobs have to change? It should be the farmer or whoever the hell thinks it's ok to spray poison all over our food. The boobs don't even need to come up in this conversation.

    @greengrey: The HIV virus is not actually present in breastmilk itself BUT, if there is any kind of crack in the nipple it can be passed that way - ie if the mother bleeds a little (which does happen sometimes). If there are no cracks in the nipples studies have shown the milk should be safe.


    I totally agree it would be a worry though, in the US they would always advise that a woman with HIV should bottlefeed to be on the safe side. In Africa studies have found that the transmission rate is pretty low anyway, but if women follow certain protocols (on top of looking after their nipples not feeding the baby any solids until they are over like 8 months because earlier can cause tiny tears and abrasiions in their gut that can make transmission more likely if the mother were likely to have a bleed) that is is safer for an HIV infected mother to breastfeed. Bottlefeeding leads to much more death there. (Bottlefeeding is notoriously unsafe in areas with bad wter supplies and also it is too expensive in most cases for women to continue.)


    I know we are not talking about Africa, but I just find this all interesting! Sorry for going off topic a little.


    More on point - from what I have read, most women who make arrangements with someone to buy breastmilk (it is getting more and more common) usually have the woman have blood tests to be sure she is disease-free.

    Considering that milk banks that are used to help premmie babies whose mothers are having trouble breastfeeding, have a huge problem getting supplies ( mainly cost of refrigeration etc) I don't think there is going to be a lot left for icecream.

    This reminds me of the gallery show I went to where the artist brewed a keg of beer from her vaginal yeast. I think I was the only square that didn't drink it. I still feel conflicted over that one, like it makes me a worse feminist that I'm so squeamish.
