For a moment I was horrified and had a sick feeling - I thought this lady was scalping real first editions and making them into purses. It was as if she was murdering babies for their soft baby perfect for leathergoods skin. Now that I see it's felt, I feel better. #olympialetan
@spikenard: I somehow missed the bit about "based on" as well and started twitching. Anxiety has subsided now, so I can appreciate her skill and talent instead. Whew. #olympialetan
@ElleDriver: Good thought, but first editions of books like these can be astoundingly expensive, especially if the dust-jacket is present and in good condition. They add a LOT of value. Catcher in the Rye, first edition with jacket is $11,000!! #olympialetan
It's a cool idea, but I think that if I had that kind of collection of first editions I'd want them sitting on my library, rather than swinging off my arm in a bar acting as some jerk's gin and cigarette ash disposal unit. #olympialetan
Is it only me that is depressed that the covers are being removed from first edition books? I think the bags are cute, but I really love books :( #olympialetan
@melliejellybelly: My fault for not looking closely enough. When I lived in Washington D.C. there was a craftsman who made bags from actual book covers. They were sold at Eastern Market. I thought that the look was really neat, but was sad about the books. I am now on board. I think that as long as the artist uses books from the public domain there isn't necessarily a copyright issue... #olympialetan
@melliejellybelly: That would have been Rebound Designs, aka Me. All of the books I use are discards from libraries, so they were damaged/about to be thrown away. Don't be sad, I am saving them! See more at www.rebound-designs.com.
@caitlin003: Based on the etsy site, you do lovely work. I freaked out a bit reading this item initially, because I missed the "based on" bit. I have no problem with repurposing discarded/damaged books - I think you're giving them new life - but the idea of using first edition dust jackets scared me. #olympialetan
@TexasCrude: yeah, that's what these "purses" look like - false books that you can store secret stuff in, not so much like purses. I don't think they work that well as accessories. #olympialetan
@TexasCrude: HEE. I used to pay for mine by "loaning" my "friend" my copy of Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy and sticking the money in the pages. #olympialetan
@Acefreakly: False books are the best, especially if you own books by the hundreds. No one knows where I keep my junk, weed or cash savings. #olympialetan
She's right about book covers these days. It is rare that I'm impressed with cover art lately, which makes me sad. Granted, I realize everyone is not a voracious reader, but I'm the type who will go to the bookstore and buy books based solely on the cover or the blurb, and I always know I'll enjoy them, because I enjoy reading*. But I must admit that good cover art goes far.
*This led me recently to reading The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters which I never want to finish, because I'm enjoying reading it so much, even though I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON IN THE BOOK. #olympialetan
@likepenguins: I'm the same; unless there's a new one coming out by a fave author that I've been dying for, I'm very much a cover-judger. That and "Is it long enough to keep me occupied for a long enough period of time to justify paying money for it?" Which is how I came to own The Crimson Petal and the White, the cover of which would make an AWESOME purse. #olympialetan
WANT SO HARD. And it's perfect timing as I'm badly in need of a new purse. Hanukkah's coming. Better start forwarding this link to everyone I know! #olympialetan
@bookling: I thought that, too! If I hadn't read the book, I probably would've thought that they were just making out on top of the sled. I'd be in for quite a rude awakening. :-) #olympialetan
I love the Sartorialist, but I've found that lately there's been a kind of same-ness about his photos and his subjects. I find that these days I prefer style blogs where people photograph and write about their own outfits, whether thrift store finds or high fashion.
Oh, and is anyone here a member of the wardrobe_remix group on Flickr? ([www.flickr.com]) It's a "DIY street fashion community" and I love it because you get a wide range of different styles and aesthetics there, from people who are most assuredly dressing themselves. It's fun and inspiring, and I don't want to rave about it too much, but I really encourage folk to check it out and maybe even join.
I hadn't been over in a while, and whilst perusing his Florence pix, realized that men wearing beautiful leather oxfords w/out socks really makes me uncomfortable. They all looked.. hot, and not sexy-hot, but blistery-hot.

I think I would have an easier time attaining an original first-edition book than one of the purses. :( #olympialetan
