I love Denzel. The man should have won his Oscar for Malcolm X but I enjoyed his the over the topness of Training "King Kong ain't got nothing on me" Day.
I agree with today's NYT review that said he is one of the most charismatic American actors since Paul Newman.
He's a stage trained actor, not a rapper. Denzel's dying breed. I can't even name two young black male actors who have the range or opportunity Denzel had. Sad.
@nyc-caribbean-ragazza: Chiwetel Ejiofor and Idris Elba. I actually totally agree with your point, but I was just talking about this last night- about how there is a generation of black actors coming out of Britain who are stage trained and once they get there American accents down seem to be doing amazingly versatile work. It's still not enough though, obviously, and I think it's sad that the U.S. seems to only be pulling from rappers. Not that they're all bad, but still.
I haven't wanted to see a movie in a long while, but reading about the O'Keefe film has me positively salivating. I lived in Santa Fe during the early 80's and worked in a gallery part-time for a year. One afternoon she walked in with a couple of assistants. It was a total shock - at that time she hardly left her Ghost Ranch. I found her to be quiet but also warm, gracious and genuine. She asked me some questions and learned I was a musician and had just finished my first recording. A week later I received a note from her mailed to me at work asking for a copy! I still have the note and wouldn't think of ever parting with it.
She was a remarkable woman who was far ahead of her time.
Can I just say to all the Muslim men out there who believe that God gave you a right to beat your wives... why don't you READ the texts?! You are supposed to cherish your wives and treat them like equals! The same way the prophet cherished his wife! *grumbles*
Is it weird that the article on domestic violence in the British Muslim community only features Dr. Husain's anecdotal commentary?
This is not to belittle the experiences that she has had or the clear signs of abuse that she has seen. (Or, for that matter, the experiences of the women she treats, which sound horrible.) But shouldn't the Telegraph cite more than her evidence from her exams, e.g. stats on whether domestic violence is higher in the Berkshire area generally or the DV rate in England?
@TexasCrude: I have a tangle of scars both on my knees and under my chin from my ill-fated attempts to stay aloft while in roller skates and on a skateboard. I trip over my own feet even when just in my chucks. I was so jealous back when everyone went rollerskating in the 80s. I wanted to be a juke box hero too, but alas, was just a juke box zero.
@AbbyNormal: you know, I was SO jellis of the people who could do that swoopy thingy around the orange cones when they rollerskated. It looked so easy. I learned the hardway that it's not!
I read that headline really fast and I thought it "New Georgia O'Keefe Rollergirl Lifetime movie". And I was all, man, that's a stretch even for Lifetime. Where's the stalking and Gregory Harrison come in?
@Hamsterpants: That would be a movie to watch. Georgia is the housemother to a team of roller derby girls, and teaches them valuable life lessons when not painting pictures of vaginal roller skates. In a world where life keeps on rolling, you learn to roll with the punches.
So there's an upside to the crippling migraines and cluster headaches I've suffered my whole life? Funny, I don't feel lucky, but good news nonetheless. My girls are safer, but my noggin winces.
@Cuteasabutton...does not suffer fools gladly.: I considered joining roller derby, but I just feel uncomfortable with the apparent level of fetishisation. Maybe I'm just too young for all of this 'irony'.
@Cuteasabutton...does not suffer fools gladly.: me too, when i was young that is all i did, i even learned how to do the spinning trick all on my own, after a lot of eating concrete. Aaaaahhh, the good old days.
My boyfriends sister decided that for her birthday we are all going to a skating rink, I cant wait.

Relevant part starts around 2:30. (And Will Smith does seem a better fit) :-)

*Even though they are never mentioned on Valleywag. Maybe if Leah Culver joined the team?
