MAC Cosmetics to Release Selena Collection, Thanks to Powerful Fans

20 years after Selena Quintanilla’s untimely passing, her fans remain as passionate and loyal as ever. In February, a petition on Change.org was started by Selena superfan Patty Rodriguez, urging M.A.C. Cosmetics to create a collection based on the legendary Tejano singer and beauty icon. The petition, which garnered over 37,000 signatures, asked fans to spread word via social media. M.A.C heard their pleas loud and clear, and have announced “M.A.C. Selena,” a multi-product collection, to be released in the second half of 2016.

“Selena’s talent and beauty, inside and out have, have left a colorful, meaningful impact in the world, that has continued to grow over the last two decades,” MAC Senior Vice President/Group Creative Director James Gager said in a statement to People. “We have heard the passion and enthusiasm from her fans and wholeheartedly agree that her legacy embodies M.A.C.’s philosophy.”

While product names and other details about the line have not yet been released, it may be safe to expect an array of lip colors, as Selena was known for sporting a bold red lip and other rich hues. Will the products be named after some of her songs like, “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” or “Como La Flor?” Will there be any reference to Selena’s favorite food of pizza?

Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister also told People, “I am so excited that MAC Cosmetics will be releasing a collection in honor of my sister Selena. Helping to create this collection brings me back to all those late night conversations on our tour bus when she spoke of having her own makeup line one day. If Selena were here she would be beyond ecstatic to have this happening. History is being made.”

Selena was only 23 when she was murdered by Yolanda Saldívar, a friend, employee and president of her fan club. In April, Fiesta de la Flor, the first festival honoring Selena’s legacy, was held in the singer’s hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas.
