Disturbing Video Shows School Safety Officer Appearing to Assault Black Student Sitting in Desk

Latest

In the above video, now making the rounds on social media, a school resource officer at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina, confronts and then brutally manhandles a female student. Via WISTV:

School officials confirm the incident happened on Monday, but stopped short of releasing further details.
According to Sheriff Leon Lott, the school resource officer was acting in response to a student who was refusing to leave class.
“The student was told she was under arrest for disturbing school and given instructions which she again refused,” Lott said. “The video then shows the student resisting and being arrested by the SRO.”

As far as the video shows, if she’s resisting, she’s resisting quietly. The officer then puts the student in a chokehold and then pulls her up and out of her desk, overturning it; he then drags her across the room and orders her to put her hands behind her back. That’s where the video ends.

According to WISTV, the Richland County police department, along with the Spring Valley High School administration, is investigating this incident, which has already drawn a local response:

A group calling themselves the Richland Two Black Parents Association called the video “egregious” and “unacceptable.”
“Parents are heartbroken as this is just another example of the intolerance that continues to be of issue in Richland School District Two particularly with families and children of color,” the statement said. “As we have stated in the past, we stand ready to work in collaboration to address these horrible acts of violence and inequities among our children”.

School cops have seriously injured an alarming number of students in the last half-decade. Richland County is 110 miles north of where Walter Scott was killed in April of this year.
