Tina Fey Has Had it Up To Here With 'Grey-Faced Men' Telling Women What Rape Is

Latest

Tina Fey gave a rousing, appropriately angry speech at the Center for Reproductive Rights Gala last night during which she decried the “grey-faced men” with “$2 haircuts” trying to define rape for all the simple minded ladies of America. Here’s a clip from her speech, which I kind of wish came in necklace form. In fact, I think I’m going to finally cave and buy that iPad so that I can attach a chain to it and wear it everywhere, just playing this Tina Fey speech on a loop.

Fey was a special guest at the CRR’s Gala last night, the 20-year-old Center’s first Gala that raised money for the legal defense of women’s reproductive rights both domestically and around the world. A pretty intimidating roster of she-roes was present, including Isabel Allende, former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, Amy W. Schulman, Christine Quinn, Janeane Garofalo, and other lady badasses who have had it up to here with this bullshit.

While Fey’s speech was amazing, the highlight of the night, for me, was this bit of Bachelet’s speech:

No woman should pay with her life for a lack of options. But every year, 47,000 women die from unsafe abortions. Complications of pregnancy and childbirth are the number one killer of young women aged 15 to 19 worldwide.
It is unacceptable that we continue to talk about deaths we can prevent. What is really at stake here is the right to life: a woman’s right to life, and all the other human rights to which every woman is entitled.
Women must enjoy full and equal rights – to sexual and reproductive health, to education, to be equal participants and leaders in their economies and societies, and to be free from violence and discrimination.

Women: ALSO HUMANS! is a heartbreakingly simple refrain. And to paraphrase almost everyone who spoke at the Gala last night, it’s kind of hard to believe that we’re still having this conversation.

To further drive the point home, Fey’s speech was followed by this gutpuncher of a short film.

Last night’s event raised over $1 million for the Center.
