Whore Houses Are Now Funding Broke Greek Soccer Teams

Latest

The financial crisis in Greece is so bad that the severe governmental budget cuts have essentially left the country’s sports clubs for dead. Pulling themselves up by their cleat straps, the teams have had to get creative to find funding. While other teams have turned local funeral parlors or feta cheese companies for sponsorship, the amateur Voukefalas club have been bailed out by two different brothels.

In exchange, the teammates have to wear pink jerseys with the bordellos’ names on them—”Villa Erotica” and “Soula’s House of History.” But for now, league organizers say they can only wear the shirts during practice, as they violate the “sporting ideal” and are inappropriate for younger fans.

Brothel owner, Soula Alevridou is awesomely described as:

[A] slightly built woman with a husky voice…holding a cigarette and wearing a straw fedora with a leopard print band…dressed all in white and flanked by two young women in dark leggings at a recent game.

All she’s missing is her chalice and cane.

She isn’t bothered by the team not being able to wear her jerseys to their games. “It’s not the kind of business that needs promotion,” she says. Surely not one to shy away from balls, Alevridou just really likes soccer. And at the core of it, she’s a patriot, looking to do her part as a citizen.

“If we don’t help our scientists and athletes, where will we be?” she asked. “Greece has educated people, cultured people and good athletes. It’s better to help them than take our money to Switzerland. I am a Greek woman, and I love my country.”
