More Women Want Bigger Boobs, And It's Christina Hendricks' Fault

Why did the number of breast augmentations in the U.K. increase more than 10% last year despite the recession? Well obviously, Joan Harris is behind this newfound fascination with large breasts!

New statistics from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) show that the number of women who had breast enhancement surgery in 2010 was up to more than 9,000 a year, The Telegraph reports. But why are Brits suddenly splurging on implants when the economy is still crappy? A BAAPS source explains (seemingly after a reporter asked about Christina Hendricks):

You could argue that. Christina Hendricks is gorgeous, and the hourglass figure is definitely back in fashion. Let’s just say that heroin chic isn’t the big thing at the moment.

Ah, it all makes sense! Two decades after “heroin chic” came into vogue, the trend is finally losing steam. It’s about time! Who isn’t sick of seeing flat-chested women celebrated on the covers of men’s magazines while large-breasted are women passed over for roles in movies and television?

The number of breast augmentations had stalled from 2008 to 2009 in the U.K., but then Christina Hendricks came along. Well actually, Mad Men premiered in March 2008 on the BBC, so Joan’s heaving bosom initially inspired fewer boob jobs before surging two years later. That’s because it took people a few years to save up for the surgery, according to economic statistics I just made up.

Clearly Hendricks’ influence is undeniable. For instance, The Daily Mail reports that in 2009 there was a 28% increase in men getting surgery to reduce the size of their breasts, which are known in the scientific community as “moobs.” Now just take a look at what Hendricks told men in Esquire:

If we’re in love with you, we love your body: your pot belly, everything. Even if you’re insecure about something, we love your body. We embrace everything. Because it’s you.

Then why the increase in surgery? Think about it: To embrace a fellow’s moobs is to say to him that he has moobs, and gosh, what dude wants moobs? Therefore said moobs must be corrected. Insidious reverse psychology at work!
