Yosemite is burning. For the past 10 days, firefighters have been struggling to contain the Rim Fire, now one of the largest in the California's history.
Law of unintended consequences.
We've spent so many years preventing fires of any kind, allowing combustible organic matter to pile up between adjacent trees. So instead of having several small fires, we get one giant conflagration. The only problem is, with giant fires the trees tends to not regenerate... instead of forests, we get grasslands.
