Whoopi Goldberg, who’s held more than a few questionable opinions on The View but tends to be progressive in certain areas, is doing something cool on TV—producing a show about transgender models.

Deadline reports:

Oxygen Media has greenlit Strut, a new original series about fashion models working with Slay Model Management, which bills itself as the world’s first exclusively transgender modeling agency.

“This show is important right now because for all of the positive advances the community has made and continues to make, transgender is still a hot-button word that gets people hysterical,” Whoopi said in a press announcement. “You may even be surprised to discover that you have been seeing and interacting with transgender men and women in ways you didn’t even realize!”

The View co-host also says she considers the show to be “a unique opportunity to spend time with real people who are struggling with the same challenges we all face as we make our way through the world.”

"Not a real" DrDonna

This just in: I don’t know how to feel about this!

Like, yay trans visibility, but also this will concern models, which is vastly different from most trans folks’ lived experience. It'll feature actual trans people, instead of cis folks, for once, but also its being produced by someone who, as the article notes, has some troubling ideas about rape and race. Also, as Caitlyn insists on demonstrating to the utmost of her ability, not all visibility is good visibility.
