What Does Your Entrée Say About You?

The New York Times 'Thursday Styles' section has a story about girls who eat steak on dates. Salad is out, meat is in, claims Times writer Allen Salkin. Women in the article assert that eating red meat tells a guy they are "unpretentious and down to earth and unneurotic," while ordering a salad "seems wimpy, insipid, childish." One woman doesn't order salad because she doesn't "want to be considered vapid and uninteresting." Another woman, when out with a group — including a guy she liked — was worried about ordering a burger in front of him. "I didn't want to appear too much of a carnivore," she said. "It might be off-putting." But in the end, she ordered the hamburger and afterward, she and the guy started dating. Some of us love red meat and have no problem ordering steak in front of a new dude (one of us is a vegetarian and opts for sushi on first dates), and some of us think that when you order food, there is one true message you're sending: "I'm hungry."
