Wendy Davis Has A Republican BFF Defending Her From Right Wing Attacks

Well, OK, they are not really BFFs at all. But Becky Haskins, a Republican and former colleague of Davis, is having none of the stupid bullshit attacks from the right wing about the Democratic gubernatorial candidate’s personal life. And what she has to say about the whole mess is pretty on point.

It really is nice to see a Republican in my beloved home state speaking out against the recent barrage of sexist, stupid attacks Davis has been subjected to lately.

Conservatives are on a roll, launching attack after attack, alleging Davis lied about her background as a single mother, following an article in the Dallas Morning News. Almost everyone from Ben Shapiro at Brietbart to Rush Limbaugh (who called her “a genuine head case“) has taken their shots by now.

But that’s when Haskins stepped into the conversation. Haskins totally nails the reason for these attacks, too (emphasis mine):

Speaking with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, [Haskins], a former
GOP colleague of Davis’ when she served on the Fort Worth City Council, said, “If this involved a man running for office, none of this would ever come up.”

“It’s
so sad,” Haskins continued. “Every time I ran, somebody said I needed
to be home with my kids. Nobody ever talks about men being responsible
parents.”

I’m a going to throw away any illusions of being unbiased and say that as a woman in Texas trying to make sure my reproductive rights aren’t flushed down the shitcan in this state, I FUCKING LOVE WENDY DAVIS. She is my hero, my idol, my sun, my moon and my stars. And I’m glad to see another politician step up to the plate and call out this horrendous bullshit for what it is.

Davis herself had a pretty good response to all this on Monday:

“[The attacks] won’t work, because my story is the story of millions
of Texas women who know the strength it takes when you’re young, alone
and a mother,” Davis said in the release. “I’ve always been open about
my life not because my story is unique, but because it isn’t.”

I covered politics in Texas as a reporter for a long time and Haskins is
so fucking dead right about the double standard, it makes my head
spin. But Haskins had something even more important to say about the bullshit being lobbed at her former colleague right now that I think will give us all something to smile about this evening.

“They wouldn’t be talking about Wendy if she weren’t a threat,” said Haskins.
