Vivienne Westwood, for the Demented Fifties Housewife on Acid in You

Latest

Now that New York Fashion Week has wrapped up, London Fashion Week has kicked off. And yesterday, punk rock icon Vivienne Westwood presented her Spring 2013 show, which channeled Mad Men: The Lost Weekend. Many of the silhouettes were completely classic, but there was always something slightly off: Perfectly-fitting dresses had disturbingly busy patterns; stripes were haphazardly running in odd directions; jackets looked mis-buttoned even when they were not.

Then there was the makeup — faces were painted green or orange, like a beauty treatment gone wrong. Thanks to the wacky, dramatic styling, even the ensembles that seemed straightforward — like the buttery yellow sweater set paired with a kicky blue skirt pleated at the hem — had an air of suspense and unpredictability to them, like a Hitchcockian heroine you’re pretty sure is lying to you. Still, the color palette was lovely, and there were some very wearable pieces. Of course, nothing as exciting as the get-up the 71-year-old designer wore when she took her bow.
