Joran Van Der Sloot has plead guilty to the 2010 murder of Stephany Flores in a Lima, Peru hotel room. He apparently offered a "sincere confession," which under Peruvian law could get him a shorter sentence than a standard guilty plea. According to the AP, he said,
Yes, I want to plead guilty. I wanted from the first moment to confess sincerely. I truly am sorry for this act. I feel very bad.
If by chance the jury is unmoved by this outpouring of remorse, Van Der Sloot's attorneys hope to convince them that he was driven to kill Flores by the "extreme psychological trauma" of being accused of killing Natalee Holloway five years prior. Good luck with that one — I really can't imagine a more watertight defense than, "I murdered someone because I felt so bad that everyone knew I probably murdered someone else."
