Twenty-five years ago, Yvonne McCain and her lawyer, Steven Banks, filed a lawsuit against the City of New York for having no standards of how to house homeless families. McCain and her children, the victims of domestic abuse, were subjected to terrible conditions and continued homelessness because of the city's lack of facilities. This week, Banks reached a settlement with the City in the case that will guarantee that New York will provide facilities for homeless families. When reached by her lawyer, McCain, currently suffering through her second battle with cancer, said "This is what we went to court for so many years ago. I am glad I lived to see this." And then I cried. [NY Times, NY Times]
