Tip: Don't Use Martin Luther King's Image to Promote Your Twerk Party

Latest

A “Freedom 2 Twerk” party in Michigan has been canceled after the venue owner saw the flyer for the event, which featured an image of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wearing a gold medallion and flashing a gang sign.

According to The Smoking Gun:

The January 18 party at Flint’s Social Network Event Center was organized by a group calling itself Mid-Michigan Teen Parties, according to the flyer.

The King familly has actually been in court recently, trying to ban a nonprofit from using the late civil rights leader’s image. Dr. King’s estate owns his image, likeness, recorded voice and memorabilia — including speeches, letters, writings and sermons. The King Center has terms and conditions for using Dr. King’s intellectual property. Pretty sure promoting Mid-Michigan Teen Parties is out of bounds.
