The SNL Anthem For Sexually Dissatisfied Women

Latest

The most recent Saturday Night Live/Lonely Island video is all about dudes bragging they just had sex — with Blake Lively and Jessica Alba rolling their eyes, unimpressed, in the background. Funny-sad or just plain funny? Let’s investigate.

This one has already struck a chord: Since airing on SNL Saturday, the video has over 2.6 million YouTube viewings as of this writing, not to mention on Hulu, NBC’s website, and on TV and DVR. And rightly so: It’s hilarious, from the sparks flying from their crotches to Akon’s totally-committed glee.

The Hulu description is “Lonely Island and Akon sing an anthem for anyone who just had sex.” But it’s not exactly about anyone. Just check out these lines from the lyrics:

  • “A woman let me put my penis inside her.”
  • “A girl let me do it.”
  • “Nice of her to let you do that thing.”
  • “I’m surprised she even wanted me to do it.”
  • I’m so humbled by a girl’s ability to let me do her.”
  • “So this one’s dedicated to them girls / That let us flop around on top of them”

So yeah, women never want sex, men always do, and any sex that takes place is the result of a woman reluctantly giving it up, maybe because she wants something else. On the other hand, you can’t blame the girls for not being that into sex when they’re having it with dudes who don’t even give a moment’s consideration to their partners during those “30 seconds.”

The joke, of course, is that these guys are delusional, and anyone with working eyes sees Lively and Alba elaborately miming their discontent (until they too join in on the singalong fun). But how many people will see it that way and how many will just high-five along with the cliches?
