The Snakes Are Everywhere!

On planes…in the woods…in the White House…

Here’s all the shit we couldn’t cover today:

  • President Trump sees snakes and traitors everywhere, and last year reportedly carried around a handwritten list of people he suspected were leaking info about the utterly wild shit happening in the White House. [Axios]
  • During his third day of hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee, nice normal dude/man who would in all likelihood gut abortion protections Brett Kavanaugh appeared to describe contraception as “abortion-inducing drugs.” Here’s what he said in an exchange with Senator Ted Cruz on his dissent in the Priests for Life lawsuit, brought by a rabidly anti-choice Catholic organization against the Obama administration: “That was a group that was being forced to provide a certain kind of health coverage, over their religious objection, to their employees. And under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, the question was, first, was this a substantial burden on their religious exercise, and it seemed to me quite clearly it was. It was a technical matter of filling out a form. In that case, they said filling out the form would make them complicit in the provision of uh, the, uh, abortion-inducing drugs that they were as a religious matter objected to.” [Twitter]
  • More Kavanaugh news: In newly released and previously confidential emails, Kavanaugh once described a federal government affirmative action program that supported minority-run businesses as “a naked racial set-aside.” [Mother Jones]
  • And an email chain from 2001 was also just released, in which Kavanaugh and his friends discuss a bro bonding trip and made jokes about a boat named Su Ching. (“Although you may be hoping that I’ve lined up a hostess for a rub-n-tug massage session, ‘Su Ching’ actually is the sailboat,” Kavanaugh’s friend wrote.). How nice. [Huffington Post]
  • The Justice Department is demanding that North Carolina turn over millions of voting records to federal immigration officials. [New York Times]
  • The Trump administration now wants to detain immigrant families indefinitely, moving on Thursday to end what’s known as the Flores agreement. [Associated Press]
  • In more despicable news, thousands of low-income Arkansas residents are being stripped of their health insurance as the state begins to implement work requirements for Medicaid recipients. [Washington Post]
  • Texts sent to some voters in Texas that claimed to come from Beto O’Rourke’s campaign and asked voters to help drive undocumented immigrants to polling stations did not, in fact, come from the campaign. [Texas Tribune]
  • Finally some good news! Whole Foods employees have kicked off a unionization drive. Did I mention that Amazon, the owner of Whole Foods, is worth $1 trillion? Makes you think, huh. [Wall Street Journal]
  • More good news: rent control is being expanded in New York state. [Patch]
  • New York and New Jersey are moving to investigate how Catholic dioceses handled sexual abuses cases. Better late than never…I guess? [NBC News]
  • Marco Rubio: I don’t know her. [Associated Press]
