The idea that guns in the hands of private citizens either protects those citizens or provides a check on government power is intellectually bankrupt in the 21st century. It's entirely overdetermined. That is, anyone who really believes that is making up for some feeling of powerlessness in their life by telling themselves this mechanical object (with great and tragic destructive potential) somehow gives them personal or political autonomy.
