Elizabeth Scharpf won the Curry Stone Design Prize for creating sanitary pads made from banana trees, which are 65% cheaper than Procter & Gamble's pads. Scharpf's organization Sustainable Health Enterprises is helping African women start their own banana pad businesses.
Heard this woman on NPR this morning and the whole story was great. She learned that women were averaging 33 days out of work/year because, in large part, of the unavailability or expense of sanitary supplies and the related embarrassment. She saw a market need and a way to increase education and productivity. A really great project. Hope her company does keep the prices low for women and are able to scale to provide options across Africa.
