A terrifying attack has shaken Portland, Texas, a quiet community outside of Corpus Christi with a low crime rate. They hadn't had a murder there in two years, but that all changed on Saturday, when two teenage girls were found in a park after having been shot in the head. Mary Christine Chapa, 18, was still alive and was rushed to the hospital, where she is now in serious but stable condition. Sadly, her girlfriend, 19-year-old Mollie Judith Olgin, died of her injuries.

The girls had been together for about five months, according to their friends. It's not yet clear whether their sexuality played any role in the crime. Portland Police Chief Randy Wright reports, "That's always something that we're looking for, but as of this point, we have not been able to establish that that had anything to do with the attack." He did note, however, that they had been able to talk to Chapa and that it appeared that "third parties" were responsible for the attack. They don't have a suspect so far, but they did find a large-caliber bullet casing at the scene, and Wright says, "It appears as if … this was not just a random attack but that's something that we really have to develop over time."

Meanwhile, friends of the couple can't understand why anyone would do this. Samantha Garrett, Olgin's roommate, said that the girls hadn't gotten any harassment about their relationship, and she couldn't think of any reason anyone would want to hurt them. Let's just hope they can find out who's responsible and stop them from hurting anyone else.

Nothing but sadness. Best wishes and a speedy recovery to Ms. Chapa, condolences to the family of Ms. Olgin. May they catch the wretched specimens that did this horrible act soon, soon, soon. What can you even say? The mind boggles at the cruelty and hate that humanity is capable of.
