You’d think artists who reach a certain level of fame work tirelessly to perfect whatever their latest track is to share with the general public and their happy fans. Turns out, when you are as famous as Swift, you don’t even need to put out actual, real music to make tons of money.

Earlier this week, fans noticed iTunes was offering a new track from Swift’s upcoming album 1989, simply titled “Track 3.” Despite the fact that it was only time length of the song was listed as :09 (and, if anyone bothered to preview it, was nothing but white noise), enough fans shelled out $1.29 for it to vault the song to number on Canada’s iTunes chart, according to CBC News.

The Independent explained that this was likely not Swift’s highly awaited experimental music phase, but just an iTunes glitch:

Given that Swift did release an actual single from the LP yesterday, “Welcome To New York”, many fans presumed this to be her next offering and went straight to downloading it without playing the sample of the track first.

The best part of this is how fans jumped to call upon their beloved TayTay herself to help them out when they found out the new song was NOT WORKING OMG.

Others have pointed out that the rise in the song’s popularity could have actually been because of pre-orders from people snapping up her new album. Or, as I speculate, it’s because the entire world is ensnared in some kind of Hypnotoad-induced trance Swift likely conjured up during one of her last televised performances. Let’s all be on the safe side and never look her directly in the eyes ever again.
