Stand-Up Isn't So Bad in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Trailer

Two things that might not go well together: the fast-talking, quippy, zippy, jokey, dialogue of Amy Sherman-Palladino and, uh, stand-up comedy. Here’s the twist: in the trailer for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, somehow it works?

After surviving Amazon Prime’s pilot season in March and getting a full order of not one but two seasons, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has a full trailer and a release date—November 29. The plot is like a Grace Paley short story with a weird little twist that sounds very bad in theory, but will be fine in execution: an Upper West Side housewife turns to the warm and inviting arms of stand up comedy when her husband suddenly leaves her.

Against my better judgement, I really, really enjoyed this trailer and will likely enjoy the show, too—something about those jazzy, honking, big band horns and those drums that should underscore a dance scene with an energetic, enthusiastic Charleston really gets me hype. Is it my shameful musical theatre background? My affinity for period pieces set in late ’50s New York? The sense that at any moment, dancers could pop out from a knish store in the background and dive right into a very dedicated frug? I’m not sue. Still, I’m going to watch the shit out of this.
