On Thursday, Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin were spotted at a New York City courthouse, presumably to obtain their marriage license. TMZ reported at the time that the couple would probably marry sometime the following week, possibly in Canada.

Now, we have this headline, from People:

People reports that Bieber and Baldwin were actually at the courthouse to wed, not just pick up their license. “They went ahead and did it without listening to anyone,” a source told the tabloid. What’s confusing is that People then goes on to reiterate that Bieber and Baldwin were getting a marriage license, which is not the same thing as a marriage certificate—you can’t get married without a license, and once you do, the officiant files the certificate.

And yet, People wrote a second story reporting Baldwin and Bieber got married in a “civil ceremony,” but that the couple plan to have a religious “blowout” “in front of God and everyone they love” in the near future. Meanwhile, Vulture says they’re not married, TMZ says they’re not married, and the Toronto Sun says Bieber’s applying for U.S. citizenship “ahead of his wedding,” which suggests he’s not married yet.

Us Weekly, meanwhile, reports Baldwin and Bieber aren’t just married, they’re careening toward financial doom:
