While speaking to a crowd at the National Rifle Association's annual meeting, former Presidential hopeful Rick Santorum proudly announced to the St. Louis crowd that he had arranged for his daughter Bella to have a lifetime membership to the organization.

Bella, who is three and thus probably lacks the ability to properly handle a firearm, was born with a condition that will almost certainly dramatically shorten her lifespan. She was recently released from the hospital. Santorum said, "Karen and I are life members of the NRA and we wanted to announce today that I talked to Chris and now Bella is a life member of the NRA too. And I hope it's a long life."

Way to make things weird and sad, Rick.

DISCUSSION

I really, really don't want to sound crass or heartless but this reminds me of people rushing to get their terminally ill baby baptized before they die...like Bella might not live long enough to join the NRA of her own volition so we've got to run and make sure it gets done. I understand (though don't believe) Christians who believe that something horrible will happen to their baby if he or she dies before achieving a "state of grace" through baptism but this is just bizarre. It seems political to me...like at some future date Rick will use the fact that each and every person in his family is a lifetime NRA member for some sort of political gain. I hope that's not the case but I simply cannot think of another reason for doing this.

I get the creeps just thinking about it.

EDIT: Another question is why the NRA grants membership to people who aren't old enough to shoot guns.
