Rand Paul's Son Cited for DUI in Car Accident

Latest

Senator Rand Paul’s son William, 22, was reportedly cited for DUI this past weekend after rear-ending a parked car.

The Lexington Herald Leader reports that the brand-new presidential candidate’s son was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol and for not having insurance after crashing his Honda into another car. The paper reports he’s had two other alcohol-related arrests, including an assault. Via USAToday,

Paul, a senior majoring in communications at the University of Kentucky, was cited for possession of alcohol by a minor in October 2013 at the Keeneland horse racetrack.
In January of that year, he was arrested at the airport in Charlotte, N.C., and charged with simple assault of a 22-year-old flight attendant, consuming beer or wine underage, disorderly conduct and being intoxicated and disruptive on a US Airways flight.

Candidate’s kids getting arrested for dumb things is sort of a tricky question: we care, in a gossipy way, even as we understand it’s fundamentally irrelevant to the job they’re running for. Rand Paul is also less of a tough on crime, law and order, “jail everybody” conservative, which means there’s less blatant hypocrisy at work here. But William should probably stop drinking and driving nonetheless.

Through a spokesperson, Senator Paul declined to comment to CNN.
