Rain, Stains, and Helen Mirren's Pink Hair at the BAFTA Awards

BeautyStyle

It was rainy last night in London, and some of the stars on the red carpet at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards got drizzled on. But raindrops cannot stop the sheer fabulousness of Dame Helen Mirren.

Well-dressed gentlemen Simon Pegg, Suraj Sharma and Javier Bardem seemed unscathed by the downpour.

Bold guys in bowties: Damian Lewis, Sir Ian McKellan, Christoph Waltz.

Varying states of facial hair on Billy Connolly, Nicholas Hoult, Ben Whishaw.

Samuel L. Jackson looks prepared for anything. Loving Helena Bonham Carter‘s stole and Tim Burton‘s color-coordinated sling. The blue and the gray: Cloons and Ben Affleck.

Bradley Cooper‘s drenched. Daniel Day-Lewis caught a few drops. Eddie Redmayne: Fly and dry.

Oh, hello, Heartlocker, aka Jeremy Renner.

In a vivid yellow butter sculpture (?) dress, Marion Cotillard is like sunshine on a cloudy day.

Andrea Riseborough also embraces a sunny hue, and Laura Bailey‘s persimmon-colored dress is similarly cheerful.

Jessica Chastain, captivating in cobalt blue. Ready to forget all about that horrible Golden Globes dress.

Oh no! Natalie Dormer , adorable, but with a rain-stained hem.

Illusion netting/sheer mesh is still A Thing. Caroline Flack‘s sleeves are not as pretty as Saorise Ronan‘s overlayer.

Hot coppery shimmer on Gemma Chan. Weird illusiony beige stripes for Gemma Arterton. Plunging neckline on Samantha Barks. Amanda Byram sparkles like a penny.

Don’t know much about Zawe Ashton, but this dress is so strange and out there that it’s awesome. Her fun attitude helps.

Playing it safer: Olga Kurylenko, Emilia Fox, Rebecca Wang.

Romantic lace: Thandie Newton and Lily James. The first gown looks a little sloppy and curtains-ish; the latter is much better.

Black with cutouts for Laura Whitmore and Alicia Vikander. Oy. Sick of mullet hemlines.

Wow: Amy Adams stuns in lace-embellished midnight black. The hair! That big bun is wondrous.

Sarah Silverman‘s hair glistens with raindrops, which is a welcome distraction from a meh dress. Do you think Alice Eve has an ice skating event right after the red carpet?

Chic, easy, sleek, comfortable, classy: Sarah Jessica Parker‘s version of a tuxedo, with cummerbund waist detail. Looking good.

Eh, don’t hate it, but… Anne Hathaway must be saving the really good stuff for the Oscars.

Elizabeth Olsen and Hayley Atwell, both in black accented with white and soft, wavy hair.

Shades of grey for Jennifer Garner and Sally Field.

Rain stains! Jennifer Lawrence tried to keep the rain off of her dress on the red carpet…

…and ditched the jacket once she was inside. This is a very pretty dress, but it does nothing for her skin tone, and the makeup isn’t helping. A bright pink or bright red lip might have worked better. As for the hair? Hate it.

Beige lace is pretty on Annabelle Wallis. Crisp white looks good on Juno Temple, but Shingai Shinowa‘s gown is the best of this bunch.

Elaborate hair, encrusted headband and heavily beaded dress? Just regular night for Paloma Faith.

MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT THE BAFTAs: Helen Mirren debuts pink hair. She says she was inspired by a contestant on America’s Next Top Model.

Rain-stained hem? Helen Mirren doesn’t care! She twirls in the face of thunderstorms! Because Helen Mirren is awesome.
