According to TPM's Kyle Leighton, a pretty terrible thing happened on the way to Ann Romney's speech tonight — an attendee at the RNC allegedly threw nuts in the face of a black CNN camerawoman and said, "This is how we feed animals."
Details are still hazy and a CNN spokesperson has so far declined to comment on the incident in any more detail except to say that, yup, something happened on Tuesday, nuts were thrown and a camerawoman was involved.
The spokesperson, though, generally confirmed the tweet sent by former MSNBC and Current anchor David Shuster, who said: "GOP attendee ejected for throwing nuts at African American CNN camera woman + saying ‘This is how we feed animals.'" It's not clear yet whether the alleged nut-tosser was a delegate, or merely attending as an amateur racist. In a written statement, CNN, a major news network for anyone who isn't sure sometimes, managed to acknowledge that the incident probably happened the way Shuster tweeted without divulging any salient details:
CNN can confirm there was an incident directed at an employee inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum earlier this afternoon. CNN worked with convention officials to address this matter and will have no further comment.
For any of you clinging to an opium fantasy that there's now, at least, a milder, more forward-thinking GOP voting base, now's the time to take a shower and sober up because this is the sort of bullshit, however isolated this incident may be, that makes everyone realize that inflammatory GOP rhetoric is doing its part to herd voters away from the 21st century we're all clearly now inhabiting.
Update: It was actually two racist attendees. Twinsies! CNN reports that the dynamos in question were "immediately removed." The RNC released also released a statement:
Two attendees tonight exhibited deplorable behavior. Their conduct was inexcusable and unacceptable. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated.
