Pressured by Police, Gang-Raped Indian Teenager Commits Suicide

Well, here's some more terrible news for your Thursday. After being attacked and raped during a Diwali festival in mid-November, a 17-year-old girl committed suicide on Wednesday. She swallowed poison.

Of course, as is often the case, there was plenty of the police mishandling everything. Inspector General Paramjit Singh Gill, the police chief for the area, said that the teenager had been "running from pillar to post to get her case registered" but nevertheless, nothing formal was filed.

The victim's sister told Indian television that the teenager had been urged to either accept a cash settlement or marry one of her attackers.

"The police started pressuring her to either reach a financial settlement with her attackers or marry one of them," her sister told the NDTV network.

Those aren't even remotely decent choices. It's heartbreaking.

Before her death, there were no arrests, but earlier today, three suspects (two male attackers/one female accomplice) were detained.

This once again shines International light on the fact that — just like pretty much everywhere else — India has a gang-rape problem.

Man, I was just skimming some of the FB comments, and I am ready to RAGE. I cannot understand how a situation like this can somehow provide justification for some people to write, "Fuck you, India!" or "Now I can never go to India!" or "India is a terrible place!" As if India is the only place in the world where rape happens. Or where rape culture exists. Or where rape is handled beyond terribly by the police. I just get so angry when people use tragedies like this to fuel or vocalize their own racism and xenophobia.

(That being said, this case was handled beyond horrifically, and the rapists and accomplices absolutely must be brought to justice; of course, the "justice" system itself clearly needs an overhaul.)
