Though every Beatles lyric has been analyzed thousands of times, the line "pretty nurse selling poppies from a tray" from the 1967 song "Penny Lane" had always been a mystery. But a childhood friend of John Lennon's has identified the woman in a new book about growing up in Liverpool. He says she is Beth Davidson, a woman who sold poppies on Penny Lane dressed in a cadet nurse's uniform. Williams recalls Lennon and a group of other boys striking up a conversation with Davidson on the street when they were children. She went on to marry Pete Shotton, a friend and former bandmate of Lennons, and died of cancer in the '70s. [The Telegraph]
