OWN's Light Girls Documentary Extends the Colorism Debate

In January, Oprah's OWN is airing Light Girls, the sequel to the 2011 documentary Dark Girls that explores issues of colorism in the black community.

While Dark Girls tackled the prejudices facing black people of darker skin, part two will touch on the seeming privilege and disadvantages of having lighter skin. "I was trying to make up for not being black enough," says Kym Whitley in the video.

The special also features interviews with Soledad O'Brien, Diahann Carroll, Tatyana Ali, Amber Rose, India Arie and others. In the clip, you can hear one of them mention the nickname "yellow girl." Although the documentary is sure to boil up debate on whether this dark/light skin topic is healthy or tired, the more perspectives, the better.

Light Girls premieres on Jan. 19 as part of a month-long programming around the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery marches.
