Oprah Uses Harvard Commencement to Push for Better Gun Control

Yesterday, Oprah delivered the commencement address at Harvard University where she was also being awarded with an honorary doctorate. During her speech, Forbes’ 13th most powerful woman in the world took a moment to discuss gun control — specifically background checks.

She told crowds, “We understand that the vast majority of the people in this country believe in stronger background checks because they realize we can uphold the second amendment and also reduce the violence that is robbing us of our children. They don’t have to be incompatible.”

Oprah is right— the vast majority of people in this country do support background checks, but but new legislation is struggling to push its way through Congress and the Senate. Maybe now that politicians know Our Lady of Harpo is dissatisfied, they’ll actually get something done. Remember, when Oprah is unhappy, no one is happy.

(Just so my tone isn’t mistaken for snark, I really, really love Oprah.)

She also spoke out against the cable news cycle, telling students, “We all know that we are better than the cynicism and the pessimism that is regurgitated throughout Washington and the 24-hour cable news cycle — not my channel, by the way.”

No, literally — her channels are Own and Oxygen. Because Oprah is a billionaire.
