For many people in America, voicemail is useless. Coca-Cola decided to go ahead and let that cool feature go gently into the good night by eradicating its voicemail option on landlines at the company's headquarters in Atlanta. "Nooooooo!" screamed one employee.

Apparently, Coca-Cola doesn't see the value in hearing a "human" "voice" anymore and thinks it requires too much effort. Businessweek reports:

The decision to kill voicemail was made "to simplify the way we work and increase productivity," according to an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg's Duane D. Stanford.

Coca-Cola considers texting and emailing more efficient means of communication than voicemail, which requires recipients to manually click through recorded messages on a phone and listen to them, transcribe important information, and delete them.

As we all know, manual labor is overrated. I've found voicemail to be pretty meaningless in the past few years TBH, outside of messages left by doctors and mom. According to my studies, most voicemails go unchecked.

Still, a good voicemail is a great thing. Reading this piece by Gizmodo's Leslie Horn got me all choked up and wishing I'd saved some of those awkward, old recordings as relics.


Businessweek says "many employees were upset about the change, which will save the company about $100,000." Now they can just text each other "WYD" and go from there.
